We Finally Watched Super Sharanya And It’s A Mediocre Entertainer To Watch On A Lazy Day

Super Sharanya Rating: 3/5

Super Sharanya is written and directed by Gireesh AD. The film stars Anaswara Rajan, Arjun Ashokan, Mamitha Baiju, Naslen K Gafoor, Vineeth Vishwam, Sajin Cherukayil, Vineeth Vasudevan, Sneha Babu, Bindu Panicker and others. The film also stars Anthony Varghese and Kani Kusruthi in guest appearances.

Premise of Super Sharanya

The film introduces us to Sharanya (Anaswara Rajan), a first-year engineering student, who hails from a small town. She becomes friends with Sona (Mamitha Baiju) and two other girls, who eventually become her roommates. Sharanya has a keen interest in studying and as such, doesn’t face any academic issues. However, she has a senior named Ajith Menon (Vineeth Vasudevan), her professor (Vineeth Vishwam) and classmate Sangeeth (Naslen K Gafoor) who shows a romantic interest in Sharanya. Sharanya, in the meantime, finds love in Deepu (Arjun Ashokan), whom she befriends on Instagram. How these individuals affect and impact Sharanya’s life and what she does is shown in the remaining part of the film.

Writing

Following the enormous success of Thanneermathan Dinangal, Super Sharanya had a lot of expectations. After all, it is Gireesh AD’s sophomore venture. However, the film fails to create that impact.

The story is rather simple and is made a bearable watch due to the writing. The writing is decent with some hilarious instances in the initial stages, but as the film progresses, the drama increases and becomes really boring and annoying to sit through. It doesn’t have the capability to really grab the viewer’s attention.

The several references to other films such as Arjun Reddy and Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvannabhoomi were absolutely hilarious and accounts for some smart writing. The second half was underwhelming when compared to the first half. Towards the end, there seemed to be a deliberate attempt at making a happy ending. The writer was able to capture the chemistry between several characters. The depiction of a girl’s hostel and surroundings, too, was great.

Acting Performances

What really makes the film bearable to watch is the acting performances. Anaswara Rajan as Sharanya was brilliant. From the embodiment of a small-town girl to showcasing the different emotional turmoils the character goes through, Anaswara has proved that she improves with each film.

Arjun Ashokan continues his dream run in films with yet another spectacular performance. He showcases the layered nature of his simple character with such perfection.

However, the film’s show-stealer has to be undoubtedly Mamitha Baiju. She was absolutely fantastic as Sona. The attitude, dialogue delivery, expressions and nuance with which she portrays the character is mesmerizing to watch. She single-handedly converted several average level comedy sequences into something top-notch. The other cast members too gave convincing performances.

Technical Aspects

On the technical side, it’s the music by Justin Varghese that stands out the most. The quirky background score and music elevate each scene and convey the emotions perfectly. Editing by Akash Joseph Varghese and cinematography by Sajith Purushan were done in a good manner and helped in improving the visual quality of the film.

So, Should You Watch Super Sharanya?

As a whole, Super Sharanya is a film made only for entertainment purposes. Though there are certain areas where the entertainment factor is quite low, on a whole, the film stands out as an above-average watch. The smart usage of comedy in certain sequences and the excellent acting performances, especially by Anaswara Rajan, Mamitha Baiju and Arjun Ashokan is what makes this film a decent watch. Had the screenwriting been a bit tighter and crisper with a bit more engaging story, Super Sharanya could have been a great one to watch. I personally found the film to be a decent watch. You all can check it out if you are looking to vile away time. This entertainer entertains you in parts.

Super Sharanya is now available on Zee5.
