Vythiri in Kerala’s Wayanad district has garnered praise for being the first destination in Kerala to become fully vaccinated. The vaccination drive was part of Kerala’s campaign against COVID-19 to make the state safe for travellers to visit. They wanted all tourist destinations to be risk-free for visitors. Under this initiative, Vythiri, the tourism destination, was able to vaccinate all of its citizens. The drive was held from July 13-17.

The entire population, including tourism service providers of Vythiri received the vaccine. Kerala Tourism Minister, P A Mohamed Riyas, shared, “In the post-pandemic phase visitors will be looking for safe and hospitable places to spend time. The Government considers it as vitally important to administer COVID-19 vaccine to the entire stakeholders in all the destinations across the state.”
He further added, “Blessed with unsurpassed natural beauty, Wayanad has immense tourism potential. We have major plans to develop the area as a hub for a rich mix of holiday and leisure activities including adventure tourism.” They plan to roll out the vaccination drive in Alappuzha, Munnar, Fort Kochi, Kovalam, Kumarakom, and Varkala in the coming days.
Vythiri is one of Kerala’s most beautiful destinations to vacation in. This initiative might just pave the way for other tourist destinations to follow suit. By slowly amping up Covid-19 vaccination drives across districts, the Kerala Government hopes to make the state tourism-ready. Kerala has banked on tourism for its survival. However, the pandemic put a hold on it, cutting down a major revenue for the state. The Government’s vaccination drive will soon promote domestic tourism, encouraging native citizens to visit tourist destinations.
