One often ends up buying a lot of useless products; useless and expensive too. But do you really need those gadgets? Not really, right? But you could use the money you spend on that trash to buy some things that could make a significant change to your quality of life, both now and in the future. What are these things? Here’s a list of products that every man should own.
Ok, so I start this list with dental floss because I feel it isn’t as popular as it should be. When I was younger, I was always told to “brush twice a day”, but I didn’t know what dental floss was till about 5 years ago. I didn’t give it much thought because it was way too arduous and seemed like a fad; especially with articles claiming “you want to become successful, break out your dental floss“. While correlation does not mean causation, it does make sense that someone who is a stickler to flossing can stick to other habits that will make them successful. But that aside, I kept reading about the benefits of flossing, which includes:
- Flossing does 40% of the work in removing sticky bacteria, or plaque, from your teeth
- The rest of your body is healthier when you floss.
- Prevent gingivitis (gum disease where gums become swollen and bleed easily)
- Low-cost, efficient tool to a healthy mouth
I dunno about you, but if spending a couple of minutes flossing every night can help make sure that my teeth stay healthy for a few more decades, I think that’s a fair trade. And that’s why the first thing on my list of essential products is dental floss.
And if you’re wondering how to go about flossing, check out this video.
I know you’re rolling your eyes right now. Another dental product and this one seems like a gadget for lazy bums. That’s what I thought too when I saw it for the first time. I had ‘researched’ (watched a lot of dental care videos on YouTube) to see if it made any real difference. Most videos had dentists saying that the normal toothbrush did the job if you used it right. And I thought, “I know how to brush, so why to waste money on this contraption?!”
And then, we had the Covid outbreak. This was the time when there were PSAs about how to wash your hands properly. And I realised that I had been washing my hands all wrong. What if it was the same with brushing my teeth too? Yup, it was. And that’s when I got the electric brush for the spinning head, when combined with our natural brushing strokes lead to better cleaning of your teeth. They cost nearly 10 times as much as a regular brush, but they last way longer. I used to have to replace my normal brush every month. And it is one of those things that will lead to benefits in the long run, with lower dental care costs!
Well, all of us have nose hair and it can be really pesky, can’t it? The usual way to get rid of them is to trim them using scissors, or if you’re like me and you might seek the help of a handy tweezer. But did you know that pulling your nose hair can do some serious harm? It can lead to infections and cause some painful complications. And that’s why you must have a nose trimmer in your grooming kit.

While we are on the topic of trimmers. I know how hard it is to get a good trimmer. There are just so many brands and you really don’t know if you should go for the cheap ‘Kunnamkulam’ ones or the overpriced branded ones. And if you’re someone who has seen a photo of me, you might be thinking, “What does this dude need a hair trimmer for? He doesn’t use one for sure!” Not on my face, I don’t. But there’s a lot of body hair that I have to tame. And so, I know exactly the cheap but heavy-duty, long-lasting trimmer that one can rely on. This is definitely one of the products every man should own.
The final one on this list of products every man should own is a little different from the other 4. It isn’t something for your body, but for your mind (to ensure peace of mind!). If you don’t have a passport wallet already, you should get one. And yes, even if you don’t travel much, it is a good idea to have one of these for it lets you have all your important documents and ID cards in one place. It helps save the trouble of rummaging through your stuff to find your ID card or cheque book when you’re in need of them.
That was my list of 5 products that every man should own. Are there other things that should be on this list? Tell me in the comments.
