Word On The Street: IIT in Palakkad

Nila campus, the extension of IIT Palakkad, was inaugurated this Friday under the prestigious presence of our Hon. Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. IIT Palakkad which was the first-ever installation of IIT in Kerala commenced its working from 2015 with the support of its mentor institute IIT madras.

The inauguration and the stone laying foundation was done virtually due to the pandemic. Hon. Minister Mr Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the campus by unveiling a plaque virtually. The foundation stone for the main campus was laid by the Union minister Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal.

The academic program was launched by admitting students to the B. Tech. course in the disciplines of Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Within a short span of its commencement, they were able to start Masters and Doctoral programs in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Currently, they have a sum of 640 students pursuing their undergraduate degree and 225 students in postgraduate programs. They also foster a total of 132 doctoral students.

The program was attended by several other dignitaries. V. Muraleedharan, Union Minister of State for External Affairs; K.T Jaleel, Minister for Higher Education; Ramesh Venkateshwaran, chairman of Palakkad IIT were some of the people who were present for the virtual inauguration.

“Today at the foundation stone laying ceremony of IIT Palakkad, I interacted with Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and MoS for External Affairs V Muraleedhadan and other dignitaries. Starting its journey in 2015 under the supervision and patronage of IIT Madras, today four B Tech programs, six M Tech programs, and three M Sc programs are on the path of constant progress. Now this building will give a new dimension to the progress,” stated Minister Ramesh Pokriyal to The News Minute.

Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was unable to make his speech due to network issues but he put across his thoughts on the efficiency of the premier technical institute for proactively addressing the needs of the region.

Kerala is now emancipating for an AIIMS institute after the glorious set up of IIM and IIT. Given the high literacy rate and improved facilities in education, these institutes will go a long way in promoting quality education and employment opportunities for the youth of our country.
