Top 5 Open-World RPG Games You Should Play Right Now

The ultimate protector of Mankind’s Free will!
The daring, legendary Outlaw!
The one whom even the Gods bow their heads to in reverence!
The most sought-after Monster Slayer!
The Dragon-born saviour of the World!

But to become any of the above, the path you’ll have to take is tough. Countless missions plagued with the sacrifices of your comrades, lots of failures, innumerable close encounters with lady death herself will get you there.

Welcome to the world of open-world games! These are games that will keep you glued to the console, battling foes for hours, and yet you’ll walk away from them thinking “Yes, worth it!”. In this article, we’ll look at the 5 best open-world and RPG games of this decade.

So here goes…

5. Assassins Creed Origins

Ubisoft surprised the world when they launched Assassins Creed Origins. The most celebrated franchise of the publisher was stepping out of the usual drab of a pure action game with a pre-set load of missions and limited movement. The hero is no longer loaded with flashy moves and one swipe assassinations. It’s a gruelling process of levelling up and learning new skills. If through some unfortunate incident you take on a guy of the next level, you will be the one who’s getting his throat slit! Gone are the days when the assassin comes loaded with a few tricks up his sleeve.

The story is also an interesting take on compared with the predecessors of the franchise, as for the first time you step back into the timelines Before Christ (aka BC) and you take on the role of Bayek, a Medjai (you might’ve heard this term in the Mummy movie series). They are the legendary elite force of the Pharaohs of Egypt. Coincidentally, he is also regarded as the first of the Assassins Creed battling against the older version of the Templars known as the Order of the Ancients. He is on a path to avenge the people responsible for his son’s death. Throughout the game, you will plunder pyramids laden with treasures, battle mighty heroes, and meet Cleopatra herself (wink, wink). You’re thrown into Egypt during a time of political turmoil and you’ll see the Romans trying to take control of the country from Ptolemaic monarchs. Damn cool huh? Well, check out this trailer.

4. Red Dead Redemption 2

It’s 1899 when the world of gunslingers was beginning to become a myth. Civilization was tightening its grip on America. That’s Rockstar Studios most ambitious project laid bare in front of you. Red Dead Redemption 2, which takes the 4th place in my list. You play as Arthur Morgan, a victim and an eyewitness to the slowly declining Wild West world where gunslingers, outlaws, Sheriffs, and Marshalls held the ultimate authority. You are part of the Van Der Linde gang and after a botched heist, you’re forced to flee Blackwater. The way you survive the wilds, hunt wild beasts, do some heists make up most of the gameplay. This was wildly regarded as the best in the series and millions anticipated its release. Check out the trailer to know what it feels like to be the voice of them Western folks. See you on the other side amigo!

3. God of War 4

Kratos makes one hell of a return from hell with this game. Though it’s not exactly open world, the travel between all the realms will make you feel it like it is nothing short of an open-world game. The game takes a different turn from the usual Greek mythology to the less explored Norse mythology. But with one hell of a power-packed adventure, God of War takes the third place in my list. The whole story is laid out with twists and turns with Kratos battling through Nordic ruins, runes and the Gods. God of War 4 is nothing short of a roller coaster ride. Check out the trailer to know how it feels to live amongst Gods!

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

How would you like to be the most sought-after monster slayer, the mercenary with a conscience, the creature the pubic shun, yet respects out of fear? That’s what you will become when you play as Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD Projekt Red literally outdid themselves when they launched The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and so it becomes the second in my list. With the titular character getting exactly the right amount of balance in his search for his long-lost love Yennefer and his surrogate daughter Ciri, the open-world element will put you in halt for a moment. You will be facing countless monsters, ghouls, wraiths and blood-seeking Wild Hunt enemies all throughout the game filled with Magic, might, and valour. The levelling up and the open-world elements have added an innate charm to the character with a nerve-racking story. Watch the trailer to see the kind of monsters you’ll get to vanquish.

1. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim

There is only one who will adorn the throne of open-world for all eternity. There is only one undisputed lord of all RPG games since time immemorial.

And that’s The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim!

Bethesda did not just create a game, but another dimension. That’s why even after 8 years this game still feels fresh. The endless possibilities opened through your decisions, the variety of climaxes available and of course you are the last Dovahkiin aka dragon-born of the world, the only one who can kill dragons and absorb their souls! The game customisations start from the very beginning where you choose your race to how you should look and what your course of life will be. This game literally gives freedom at its ultimate best. You can choose the race of the warrior, and still become the most powerful mage. No game can provide such levels of customisation and carving your own path. Every town, village, kingdom and mountain is full of breath-taking sights, awesome missions, and full of people you can interact with. And you can literally interact with everyone! How frigging awesome is that? Check out the trailer to know what it feels like to get out of this world and come back a Dovahkiin!
