The Indian Railways, which is the backbone of transportation in India, has been undergoing a massive modernization drive to upgrade the facilities and infrastructure of railway stations across the country. As part of this initiative, the Thrissur railway station, located in the south Indian state of Kerala, is all set to get a massive makeover with airport-like infrastructure at a budget of $36.2 million.
The modernization of the Thrissur railway station is expected to be completed by 2025, and it aims to cater to the aspirations and demands of the modern commuter. The railway station will have a wide range of facilities, including a supermarket, a rest centre, and world-class amenities that meet high standards of safety, security, comfort, and user-friendly passenger facilities.
PK Krishnadas, the chairman of the railway ministry’s passenger amenities committee, stated that the modernization is being carried out while keeping in mind the cultural heritage of Thrissur and the importance of Thrissur Pooram. Thrissur Pooram is an annual festival that is celebrated in the city, and the modernization of the railway station is expected to provide better transportation facilities for the tourists who visit the city to witness this festival.
The modernization drive of the Indian Railways started with the Gandhinagar Capital railway station in Gujarat, and it has now expanded to several other railway stations across the country, including New Delhi railway station, Bengaluru cantonment, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Ahmedabad junction, Chennai Egmore, and Udaipur railway station, among others.
The goal of this initiative is to develop self-sustainable railway stations with world-class amenities and value-added services, which will offer passengers a seamless travel experience. The Indian Railways is also focusing on increasing the capacity of railway stations to cater to the growing demand for transportation in the country.
The modernization of the Thrissur railway station is a significant step towards making Indian railway stations at par with international standards.
