Electric vehicles have revolutionized how we perceive mobility, offering eco-friendly alternatives to conventional transportation. While established manufacturers have made their mark, the DIY spirit has also sparked remarkable creations. In Kerala, a 67-year-old man named Antony John has become an inspiring example by building his electric car, showcasing ingenuity and determination. Let’s delve into the captivating story of Antony John and his affordable, eco-friendly electric vehicle, as covered by Village Vartha.
Building a Dream Commute
Antony John, a career consultant from Kollam district, Kerala, had been using an electric scooter for his daily commute to his office, around 30 km from home. However, as time went by, Antony sought a more comfortable and weather-resistant mode of transport. Disappointed by the lack of suitable options in the market, he embarked on a unique endeavour in 2018: building his very own electric car.
Research, Design, and Construction
Undertaking extensive research on car design and electrical components, Antony John collaborated with a local garage experienced in constructing bus bodies. With a design he found online, Antony provided them with the blueprint, and they skillfully crafted the car’s body according to his specifications. While the physical construction occurred at the garage, Antony meticulously handled all the electrical work himself.
Power on Wheels
Antony sourced batteries, motors, and wiring from a vendor in Delhi to complete his electric car. Although the pandemic slowed the project’s progress, Antony persevered, learning from mistakes and adjusting. Initially, he underestimated the battery power, resulting in limited driving range. However, once lockdown restrictions were lifted, Antony sought guidance from the vendor and upgraded to a higher-capacity battery, significantly enhancing the car’s range.
Legalities and Affordability
As a low-powered electric vehicle with a maximum speed of under 25 kmph, Antony’s creation does not require registration plates according to Indian regulations. However, he ensures he holds a valid driving license to operate the vehicle. Remarkably, Antony invested around 4.5 lakh rupees in this project, achieving an affordable and sustainable commuting option that costs only Rs 5 to travel a remarkable 60 km.
The Road Ahead
Proud of his creation, Antony John uses his electric car daily for his office commute, highlighting its practicality and efficiency. Additionally, he mentions having a Maruti Alto for family travel, emphasizing the personalized nature of his electric vehicle. The car’s compact dimensions make it manoeuvrable through narrow streets, simplifying parking challenges.
A Testament to Innovation
Antony John’s electric car project is a testament to human ingenuity and determination. His accomplishment showcases that with perseverance and resourcefulness, individuals can contribute to the future of sustainable transportation. His story serves as an inspiration for those who dare to think outside the box and make a positive impact on the environment.
As we move towards a greener future, stories like Antony’s remind us that innovation knows no age or limitations. Each unique endeavour paves the way for a cleaner and more sustainable world.
