Hunger is a real issue in many parts of the world, including India. According to the World Hunger Index 2020, India is ranked 94th out of 107 countries. However, a few individuals in Kerala have taken it upon themselves to address this issue and have embarked on a mission to make Kerala hunger-free in Thrissur by setting up an initiative to feed the needy.
Niabuddin, Nitin, and Jasim, three friends and expatriates from Kerala, started the Winborne Public Trust in 2018. Their mission is to provide free food to those who are hungry and cannot afford a meal. They started their first free food hall in Palakkad Kotta Maithanam last year, and now they have opened a free eatery in Thrissur, Hotel Winborn Life Care Food in Kokkala.

The eatery provides free breakfast, lunch, and dinner to anyone hungry. Those who have cash can put it in the box at the counter. The eatery has an OR code and bank account number, but the owners do not insist on money. However, they do not allow drunk individuals to enter the eatery.
The rent for the eatery is only Rs. 10,000 as the owners aim to ensure food for all rather than making a profit. There are four individuals, including women who cook the food, and their salaries and other expenses come up to Rs. 1 lakh per month. Many volunteers, such as Linson Antony, Isaac, Sasidharan, and Sreena Prathapan, come to help without remuneration.
The menu includes upma, idli, dosa for breakfast; rice, sambar, achar, and upperi for lunch; and rice or porridge up to eleven at night. The eatery is open from 6 am to 11 pm.
The owners plan to launch an app listing hotels willing to provide food at moderate and half-price to ensure food for all. If someone cannot find food, they can register on the app and enter their pin code, and they will receive information about nearby hotels. The individual can eat at those hotels for free by showing the notification number on their mobile. The trust will pay the hotel.
The Winborne Public Trust’s goal is to make Kerala hunger-free and feed the needy. The owners want to start this free food initiative in all districts to ensure that no one goes to bed hungry. It is a noble mission, and we hope that more individuals and organizations follow in their footsteps to eradicate hunger from our society.
