If there’s one thing the fashion world needs to know, it’s that ‘One Size Does Not Fit All’. In the past few years, we’ve seen homegrown fashion labels with their plus-size range enter the market. It’s a sign that we’re becoming more aware of different sizes, and the importance of inclusivity. SAMA, a fashion label from Kerala, is one such brand that caters to plus size women.
When the world serves a certain type of body type, SAMA comes in as the shining light to show you that fashion can be accessible. They want you too, to feel trendy and confident by keeping up with the latest trends in fashion.
What’s Their Story?
SAMA was co-founded by Mamtha Pillai, a Business Analyst by profession. Now, however, she’s taken the entrepreneurship route to follow her passion. Apart from running SAMA, she also manages an online plant store that deals with indoor plants and eco-friendly planters called Meraki Home Garden. She is also the founder of the Trivandrum Flea Market that supports women entrepreneurs and their small businesses. It’s a platform that gives exposure to businesses online via social media. In fact, on Women’s Day last year, she was able to successfully launch a physical exhibition called ‘Wings of Passion’ that grabbed the much-needed eyeballs.
SAMA was born out of the lack of plus-size fashion in Kerala, especially in Trivandrum where Mamtha resides. Mamtha Pillai and her friend, Sandhya Nair, had moved back from Dubai and the US to Trivandrum, and both of them realised that they weren’t getting fashionable outfits in their size. Mamtha shared, “I had been planning to start a plus size clothing store for women ever since I found it difficult to get any dress of my choice larger than XXL, especially in Trivandrum. My friend, Sandhya, too, faced the same issue. Hence, we decided to start SAMA, a plus-size shop. SAMA means equal and coincidentally, it’s a mix of our names Sandhya and Mamtha.”
This plus-sized clothing store strongly believes that everyone has the right to feel good about themselves, and no clothing options shouldn’t restrict one from expressing that. SAMA is all about making women feel comfortable and confident in their own bodies. “So far, we’ve received really good responses. More than anything, we are overwhelmed with the support we get from the public. We are happy. Hope things will turn good for SAMA and our well-wishers.” she added.
Why You Should Check Out SAMA?
At SAMA, you will find outfits from sizes Large to 9XL which includes tops, kurtis, dresses, blouses, salwar suits, skirts etc. Mamtha shared, “We just did a soft launch last month and going to introduce few more items once we start running full-fledged. After our launch, we got more orders for cotton kurtis and dresses because it is difficult to get readymades for curvy bodies.”
The price of their products ranges from Rs. 799 to Rs. 3599 for traditional and semi-casual outfits. They try to do something different in each pattern of outfits. That uniqueness is what people love about SAMA. No same patterns with different sizes are made. Each one is unique.
Pro Tip: They just launched their first Onam collection of kasavu kurtis, dresses, skirts, blouses, dhawanis. Grab them before they go out of sale!
