Meet Veena George, Kerala’s 1st Woman Journalist-Turned-Health Minister

Member of CPI(M) Veena George has had an established career of 16 years as a journalist and news anchor across many Malayalam news channels. Her appointment as the Health Minister, replacing KK Shailaja, in Pinarayi Vijayan-led government will be a feather in her cap. This is the first time in the history of Kerala that a woman journalist will become a Minister in Kerala.

For the uninitiated, Veena George has a Post Graduate degree in Physics from Kerala University (a rank holder) and has done her BEd. She began her political career by being part of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M).

As the Chief Minister and the new cabinet members take the oath on 20th May, we shall also see Veena George be a part of the ceremony. Veena entered electoral politics after a sweeping win from the Aranmula assembly seat, back in 2016 Kerala elctions. She had defeated Sivadasan Nair by a margin of 7,646 votes. After having gained a lot of supporters, she further got re-elected in the Pathanamthitta district in 2021. This will be the second term for Veena George from Aranmula.
