Kerala Floods 2019: Heres how you can keep yourself safe during the floods

The flood situation in Kerala still remains unchanged – forests uprooted, multiple landslides, lives of people and animals endangered, and houses in shambles. The districts of Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad and Kozhikode have been worst hit by the floods in Kerala.

As the torrential downpour has not shown signs of showing down, here are few things you can do to help yourself for when the water rises.

  1. Keep yourself updated with all the information about the floods via radio or news channels. Do not spread fake news on social media.
  2. In case of a flood warning, keep all your important documents in a secure location or in a water-proof container.
  3. Construct barriers that can prevent water from entering your house. Sandbags can be used as a temporary safety barrier.
  4. Prepare an emergency kit with medical supplies.
  5. Stock up on tinned and dried food, and clean water. But, make sure you move these to a high ground.
  6. If you think floods are about to hit your homes, switch off all electric supplies.
  7. Don’t not touch any electrical equipment if you’re on water.
  8. Charge all cellphone batteries and keep reusable flashlight batteries in-hand. Don’t forget to buy extra batteries.
  9. If you’re asked to evacuate, don’t panic. You will be taken to the nearest rescue centre.
  10. If you have to walk on water, carry a stick to see how deep the water is as you walk. Always be cautious of your surroundings.

We’re all in this together. Be prepared. Stay safe. That’s your priority.
