Karthyayani Amma: A Centenarian’s Remarkable Journey of Lifelong Learning and Inspiration

Kerala is mourning the loss of a remarkable woman, Karthyayani Amma, who passed away at the age of 101. Her journey in life is an inspiring reminder of the power of perseverance and the pursuit of knowledge. Karthyayani, who was born around 1922 in Cheppad, Haripad, India, became part of history as the oldest learner under the Kerala State Literacy Mission. Her astonishing adventure began at the age of 96 when she went on a route to study, which eventually led to great achievements.

Karthyayani’s journey began when she was a young girl with no access to formal schooling. At the age of 96, she accomplished a remarkable feat by scoring 98 out of 100 on a literacy exam that evaluated her writing and mathematics abilities. Her desire to learn and grow was acknowledged with the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar, an award celebrating her commitment to education. Additionally, the Kerala government provided her with a laptop to help her pursue her goal of studying English.

However, she apparently suffered from health problems in her final years of life. Following a stroke, Karthyayani Amma was allegedly bedridden for some time before succumbing to death.
