Has cow vigilantism reached Germany? That’s what Malayalis protesting after recent incidents in Frankfurt have to ask.
The Consulate General of India (CGI) had organised the Indien Fest on the 31st of August 2019, and Indians in Germany were asked to serve food that was popular back home. The Kerala Samajam Frankfurt decided to bring beef and parotta to the table.
But Kaumudi Online reported that some Hindu right-wing organisations raised objections to having beef on the menu, saying it is a “direct attack on Indian culture”, and threatened to create a ruckus at the fair. The CGI intervened and requested that they modify the menu to avoid incidents at the fair.
The Kerala Samajam Frankfurt decided to pay heed to the CGI’s request and removed beef from the menu. Here’s their official statement.
We believe that by taking the moral higher ground and taking action to avoid confrontation, the Malayalis of Frankfurt have shown the world that they are not just citizens of “God’s Own Country” but also torchbearers of the non-violent secular ideals that India was built on.
