Ace The Bottle Cap Challenge With These Quick Tips

You must already know what the bottle cap challenge is for it has taken the internet by storm. Everyone from Jason Statham to Yuvraj Singh has posted their versions of it. The ‘challenge’ started when Taekwondo fighter and instructor Farabi Davletchin posted a video of him kicking off a bottle cap. He then challenged martial celebrities Jason Statham, Conor McGregor, Van Damme, and Jackie Chan to do the same.

Jason Statham took up the challenge.

And so did Conor McGregor.

A viral trend was born. And it has hit the shore of Kerala too. Here’s our very own Neeraj Madhav kicking some serious cap.

If you are thinking of doing the bottle cap challenge, here are a few tips that will help you.

Use a filled bottle

You can’t use an empty bottle as it would just tip over. The liquid in the bottle will act as a counterweight to the force you’ll apply.

Loosen the cap

You won’t be able to generate friction to kick off a cap that is screwed on tight. But you don’t want to have it too loose either, for it will just fall off without the sexy spin. A normal bottle cap (Coke bottle) takes about 1.5-2 spins to come off, so you’d want to unscrew the cap by about 1/4th of a rotation.

Also, the bigger the cap, the less number of rotations it takes for it to come off. So it is easier to kick off the cap of a Gatorade bottle and harder to do the same with a Coke bottle.

Wear shoes

You need friction to unscrew the cap, but you don’t want the uneven surface of the sole to kick the bottle off balance either. So wear a shoe that has a flat sole and reasonable grip.

The perfect roundhouse kick?

The original challenge is to kick the cap off with a roundhouse. Now as many of you might know, it is not an easy kick to pull off. And to kick the cap off a bottle with the roundhouse would’ve seemed impossible till the internet decided to show off.

If you have some martial arts background, this shouldn’t be too much of a challenge. You’ll just have to put in some practice to perfect your accuracy. We’d recommend you record yourself (side view) practising so you know how high you can kick and get a better idea of where to place the bottle.

But if you do not know how to do a roundhouse, that’s ok. There are plenty of variations to do the challenge. Here are a few examples of people adapting the bottle cap challenge to suit them and winning it in style.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could have a coconut version of this one?

Or maybe you can try the Yuvi version?

And finally, here’s one for the dancers out there.

The point we’re trying to make is that you should choose the method that fits you best. It started with a roundhouse because Farabi Davletchin is a Taekwondo fighter. If Mike Tyson had started it, he would’ve used a left hook. In fact, he did.

You’re going to fail, quite a lot. You just have to keep at it till you get it right. Now, this might sound like life advice, but if there’s one thing the bottle cap challenge can teach you, it’s persistence. And needless to say, you’ll want a partner (to hold the bottle and shoot a slow-mo) who will stay patient till you get the perfect shot.

Now before you head off to attempt the challenge yourself, here’s some inspiration.
