We can all agree that Mollywood has impressed us with brilliant movies. Some of which, have also been adapted in other languages due to their popularity. In this piece, we’re going to focus on strong female characters who have made a mark in the Mollywood industry. Take a look!
22 Female Kottayam: Rima Kallingal
Directed by Aashiq Abu, 22FK is the story of a nurse, settled in Bangalore, who falls in love with a guy who takes advantage of her. As the story unfolds, we are shocked by the way things turn out for her. It’s one of Rima’s best performances because it’s very raw. In fact, when we see her character develop, we truly understand the nuances of being a woman in today’s world.
Paleri Manikyam: Swetha Menon
Shweta Menon won her first Kerala State Film Award (Best Actress) for this movie. Apart from it being a brilliant piece of cinema, Swetha’s prowess in terms of her acting makes this movie a must-watch. She plays an important role in the story, and that’s what adds to the suspense. Shweta has always been a demanding star and her character, Cheeru, is definitely a force to reckon with.
Thira: Shobana
Shobana plays the role of Dr. Rohini Pranab, a cardiac surgeon and a human rights activist, who discovers a human trafficking network. Throughout the movie, we’re gripped by the intensity of the story and mesmerised by Shobana’s power-packed performance.
How Old Are You: Manju Warrier
The movie, for those who’ve seen it, is inspiring in many ways. Its true essence lies in capturing a middle-aged woman’s journey to fulfil her dreams, her struggle, and her experiences. Manju Warrier depicts the nuances of her character to perfection. She is one of those gifted actors who will remain a superstar for years to come.
Uyare: Parvathy Thiruvothu
We’ve all seen articles and news pieces where this movie was compared to Bollywood’s Chhapaak. While both the movies were beautiful in their own ways, we couldn’t keep our eyes away from Parvathy’s strong performance. It is isn’t easy to take up the role of an acid attack survivor, and play it with conviction. Parvathy pulled off the character effortlessly. She has won a lot of appreciation for it, and for good reason.
Kumbalangi Nights: Anna Ben
Anna Ben’s character in this movie is unmissable. Period. She’s funny, forceful, strong-headed, and wouldn’t back down from a fight. Throughout the movie, we see her fight for what she believes in, and this makes her character someone we all can look up to.
Varane Avashyamund: Shobana
Shobana’s comeback movie was definitely an eye opener for many Malayali audiences because of the character she played. A new-gen Malayali mother who falls in love was a refreshing twist. She made us re-think the idea of a ‘mother’ – that they too have dreams and wishes that should be fulfilled.
Kilukkam: Revathy
How can we not mention Revathy from Kilukkam?! Honestly, her character will never be forgotten and is loved by all. It is definitely one of the best performances Mollywood has seen, and that’s why we think she deserves to be on this list.
Vijay Superum Pournamiyum: Aishwarya Lekshmi
Aishwarya Lekshmi’s character in this movie showed us what it means to fight for our dreams. Being a woman in this world is hard and Aishwarya was able to showcase that feeling perfectly. We could relate to her character because the story portrayed the unsuccessful side of her life too. But despite multiple failures, she strives to achieve success, and that gave us a healthy dose of inspiration.
