6 Things About P.V. Sindhu That You Should Know About

P.V. Sindhu has defeated Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara to win the gold at World Badminton Championships yesterday. She displayed complete dominance over her opponent and destroyed Nozomi in 38 minutes, storming to a 21-7, 21-7 victory. And she is now the “World Champion”! 

But that’s just one milestone in a long list of achievements. Here are a few things about Sindhu that every Indian should know. 

  1. P.V. Sindhu was the first Indian women’s singles player to win a medal at the Badminton World Championships in 2013.
  2. In September 2012, at the age of 17, she broke into the top 20 of the BWF Ranking.
  3. She received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, in March 2015.
  4. Sindhu won the silver in the women’s singles event at 2016 Summer Olympics. This made her the first Indian athlete to reach the finals of an Olympics badminton event, and the youngest Indian to make a podium finish in an individual event at the Olympics.
  5. She was ranked seventh on the Forbes list of “Highest-Paid Female Athletes 2018” with earnings of ₹66 Crore. She has been ranked 13th in the 2019 list.
  6. In 2019, she became the second woman after Zhang Ning to win five medals at the world championships.
