Before you go ahead, be warned of the “I can’t believe I am so old” nostalgia hit. We’ve all grown up watching these Malayalam movies on our television screens. It was a real treat to watch it at the time. So, here are 22 Malayalam movies that will turn 22 next year. And oh, BTW, as I write this article, we just have 33 days to go to strike the New Year’s bell. Yeah, that.
Arayannangalude Veedu
This Lohithadas movie marked Lakshmi Gopalaswamy’s debut in Malayalam cinema. With Mammootty as the lead, this film is a must-watch for all the people who love a good family drama. Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Devan, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Siddique, Jomol, Krishna Kumar, Cochin Haneefa, Lal and Bindu Panicker manage to add the right amount of flavours needed.
Ayyappantamma Neyyappam Chuttu
Remember that annoying kid that had a mushroom haircut that all our parents seemed to have fallen in love with? You’ll meet him (and most probably love him) in Ayyappantamma Neyyappam Chuttu. This children-oriented movie is about two siblings befriending an orphan, who helps them unite their separated parents.
Cover Story
An Engineer is the only witness to a murder. But, her poor eyesight makes her case as the prime witness complicated. Mysterious much? Tabu and Suresh Gopi give an intriguing performance in Cover Story – a film that involves a little bit of thrill and mystery.
Dada Sahib
The son of a freedom fighter and subedar gets into trouble after trying to fight terrorist activities in his village. If you haven’t watched Dada Sahib, do yourself a favour and stream it on Hotstar.
Daivathinte Makan
A poor man falls in love with a rich woman. They want to be together but the woman’s father is not happy with their union. The reasons are obvious. The film has Pooja Bhatra and Jayaram in lead roles.
Darling Darling
Two men fall in love with a woman. A love triangle in Malayalam cinema almost always has the element of comedy in it. Darling Darling is a film you can’t miss.
Devadoothan
The eerie song Aleena still haunts us to this very day! But, hey, the movie did keep us hooked till the end and we owe much of it to Mohanlal’s prowess, Jaya Prada’s sad theatricals and Vineeth Kumar’s spirit.
Dreams
Directed by Shajoon Karyal, Dreams is one of those rare movies where Suresh Gopi isn’t an advocate or police officer. It’s a twisted story of revenge for love but ends up being an unforgettable one.
Indriyam
We still cringe at the fact that we all found this movie scary. Oh, how wrong we were! This movie is one of Mollywood’s attempts at horror movies that goes horribly wrong (if you watch it now). Back then, it was quite the movie.

Joker
You’ll never think of colourful and vibrant circuses the same way after watching Joker. It’s a film that tells the story of what happens when the curtains close in a circus. There’s a little bit of tragedy, drama and of course, a love story with loads and loads of jealousy.
Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal
The Jayaram-Kalidas duo can never get old. The film tackles a lot of topics including a father who raises his son single-handedly, a mother with ambition, and a tale of love.
Life is Beautiful
Vinayachandran is happy with his wife until his sister-in-law tries to seduce him. While the premise of the film sounds like a porn story, it’s quite an interesting watch. At least for the sake of mindless watching.
Mister Butler
We still can’t get over the elevator cooking scene! Dileep made cooking a wholesome meal an easy task. Fried rice, as we recall. Anyway, Mister Butler has Gopalakrishnan falling in love with Radhika but he has a married past that comes to haunt him.
Narasimham
Need we say more?
Oru Cheru Punchiri
Let’s be honest. One of the best Oduvil Unnikrishnan performances you’ll ever see.
Sathyameva Jayathe
Out of all the 22 Malayalam movies mentioned in this list, Sathyameva Jayathe makes a good case for movies that stand out in the 2000s. Watch the movie not for Suresh Gopi or Kavya Madhavan, but for Siddique’s wig. We’re not going to spoil more. Experience it yourself.

How can we miss Ganga, the IPS officer? We know that Mohanlal has been stealing hearts since forever, but this movie hits different.
Swayamvara Panthal
Deepu’s sisters choose a bride for him. He happily agrees to build a relationship with his bride but soon realises that she has intellectual disabilities. What do you think he does?
Thenkasipattanam
Seems like Mollywood was really interested in love triangles back in the 200s. Thenkasipattanam is a movie that has two guys falling in love with, you guessed right, the same woman. As we write this, we’re literally vibing to Golmaalu.
