Narayanan Mooss, the Ayurveda Legend of Kerala

The death of the well-known Ayurvedic physician and the Chairman and Managing Director of the Vaidyaratnam Group, Eledath Thaikkattu Narayanan Mooss a.k.a. E. T. Narayanan Mooss, at the age of 87 has left many dismayed. He breathed his last at 8:15 pm on Wednesday (5th August 2020) at Ollur Thaikattussery manna. The funeral was held the next day at 9 AM.

E. T. Narayanan Mooss was born to Eladathu Thaikkattu Neelakanthan Mooss and Devaki Antharjanam on September 15, 1933, in Thaikattussery, located near Ollur in Thrissur. Growing up with his father, who owned the Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala and a Padmashri award recipient, he managed to be proficient in the field of Ayurveda, in addition to learning three languages (Hindi, English, and Sanskrit). In fact, it is a well-known fact that he has memorized the ancient book on Ayurveda, Ashtanga Hridayam. When Narayanan Mooss took over his father’s business at the age of 21, he managed to expand the name of ‘Vaidyaratnam’ by establishing the Vaidyaratnam Nursing Home in 1955, the Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College in 1976, and the Ayurvedic Research Centre and Charitable Hospital in 1992. He also established a herbal garden, a charitable foundation, and a manufacturing unit.

Back in 2010, he was bestowed the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to the field of medicine, specifically pertaining to Ayurveda. In fact, he has also been awarded the Akshaya Award, the Rashtriya Ayurveda Vidyapeeth Chikitsa Guru Award from the Central government, the Swadeshi Award, and the Acharya Ayurveda Award from the State.

E. T. Narayanan Mooss had established himself as a pioneer in the modern Ayurvedic treatment sphere by combining his age-old knowledge and expertise in Ayurveda practices with new-age technologies. He was among the very first people to introduce Ayurvedic medicinal pills in the market. People from all around the world come to seek treatment in his centres, especially at Ollur.

While the loss is heavy on many of us, he will still remain a legend with his name etched in the land of Kerala.
