10 Underrated Mollywood Performances From 2019

2019 was a strong year for Mollywood, but there are a few performances that we feel weren’t noticed as much as they should’ve been. Here’s a list of 10 that we felt should be given more credit than they have been.

Wamiqa Gabbi in Nine

We rarely get to see strong negative characters played by women in mainstream Malayalam movies. In Wamiqa Gabbi’s second outing in Mollywood, she was menacing and scary as Eva. The actress effortlessly pulled off the role and proved she could handle negative roles as well.

Fara Shibila in Kakshi Ammini Pilla

The physical transformation undergone by Fara Shibila to play the role of Kanthi should be applauded. But, her efforts can’t be limited to just the physical transformation, as she acted remarkably. The confusion and shock of a newlywed who is forced for divorce by her husband was brilliantly portrayed by the debutant.

Sreenath Bhasi in Virus

Virus was a movie that was packed with stellar performances. But I feel that Sreenath Bhasi didn’t get enough appreciation for Abid. Bhasi played the role of a young doctor to absolute perfection. Abid is arguably Sreenath Bhasi’s best performance so far.

Sreenivasan in And The Oscar Goes To

Sreenivasan is one of the best actors out there, but it has been a while since we saw him in a movie where he was given a role he deserved. So, it was refreshing to see the veteran actor play Aravindan in And The Oscars Goes To. Though his screen time was limited, he did leave a lasting impression on viewers.

Saiju Kurup in Android Kunjappan

Who could forget Bhaskaran’s nephew, Prasannan from the movie Android Kunjappan. Saiju Kurup, who is an incredibly talented actor, has done justice to this well-written character. He has also managed to outshine other supporting actors in the movie.

Sabumon Abdusamad in Jallikattu

Sabumon’s Kootachan was one of the best things about Jallikattu for me. Most of us wondered if Sabu will be able to pull off the role. But he surprised us with his acting skills and he was menacing as Kootachan in Lijo’s Jallikattu.

Akhil Viswanath in Chola

Nimisha Sajayan and Joju George are undoubtedly magnificent in their respective roles in Sanal Kumar Sasidharan’s Chola. But the debutant Akhil has done a wonderful job in the movie. It was great to see a first-time actor playing a vulnerable and complex character with such ease.

Lal in Helen

Is there any role that Lal can’t play? Lal is amazing as Anna Benn’s father, Paul in Helen. The bond between the father and daughter was depicted with great emotional depth in the movie. Paul is a caring, and supportive father who loves his daughter more than anything.

Anarkali Marikar in Uyare

Your best friend is the person who will always stand by you and pick you up. Anarkali Marikar plays Sariya, who is Pallavi’s best friend in Uyare. Sariya is a person who was there to pick Pallavi up when she was hurt, broken, and sad. Anarkali and Parvathy have great chemistry here and theirs is a friendship we all long for.

Leona Lishoy in Ishq

Leona Lishoy plays Mariya, a devoted wife who is married to Albie in Ishq. When she learns that the person she loved has done something terrible and unforgivable, it breaks her world apart. Leona was able to easily convey the confusion, anger, and hopelessness of Mariya. It is, in fact, an underrated performance from a supporting actress in 2019.
