5 Reasons To Watch Varshangalkku Shesham In Theatres

Varshangalkku Shesham has come out at a point in time when Malayalam cinema is at an all-time high. More than that, it has been released alongside Aavesham which features Fafa in an avatar that we haven’t seen before. So if you are wondering which movie you should go for (we’d say both), here’s my case for Varshangalkku Shesham.

The Mohanlal – Sreenivasan combo

Now, I know both Pranav and Dhyan are too early in their careers to make comparisons, but aren’t you curious to see how their chemistry has translated onto the big screen? I mean, look at all the promotional material that’s been released. Murali, portrayed by Pranav, resembles Mohanlal so much in some scenes that he managed to win over some of his worst sceptics. But it’s Dhyan who does the heavy lifting among the two – we see the story unfold through his perspective, and he had to go through the most transformation. From a happy-go-lucky teenager with a mild interest in theatre and writing to a confident budding filmmaker. And then as a broken man hitting rock bottom trying to regain his lost confidence, he delivers one of his career-best performances.

Vineeth Sreenivasan – The Brand, The Myth, The Legend

Vineeth continues his signature style in this one too, but with a twist. Much like Hridayam, he has packaged this as two films. The first half is almost entirely set in the 70s and almost feels like a different film in terms of frames, the colouring – even the music. The second half is set in the current timeline, and Vineeth has decidedly given it a different look and feel. Say what you will about the man, you know he’s an auteur, and you know there will always be a fanbase for his films.

The Music

If there’s one thing that’s consistent in a Vineeth Sreenivasan film, it’s the mellifluous music. As Dhyan said, Vineeth is an expert in packaging a scene with brilliant cinematography, soaring background score, and well-placed songs. And he does not disappoint in that department here either. All the songs have amazing recall value. Personally, I feel Nyabagam is the soul of Varshangalkku Shesham and is sure to stay in your heart long after you’ve left the theatre.

The Av(inja)engers

Basil wasn’t kidding when he said the movie has almost everyone from Vineeth’s school of filmmaking – and likened it to Vineeth’s Avengers. And you know people love Vineeth and his disciples when every single one of them gets a cheer from the crowd for their intro sequence. Also, you can have fun trying to figure out which scene Basil had to do 18 takes and which scene Dhyan had to pray in the dark before performing. 😛

All the meta references, the easter eggs, the inside-jokes

The second half has Vineeth and the team taking a dig at half the Mollywood industry and then some. But the most borderline-line offensive ones were reserved for the ones involved in this movie. But because we’re all familiar with the camaraderie these guys share, it feels like watching a group of friends getting together to roast each other. And not just that, there’s a whole sequence where Vineeth takes a dig at almost every social media influencer and some of their fans too!

Nithin Molly’s back, baby!

I kept wondering why Vineeth said that this movie would not have happened if Nivin said no to this role. I mean, after all, how important must this glorified cameo be? Now that I’ve watched it, I can fully get behind the fact that only Nivin could’ve done a role like this because our perception of Nivin Pauly as an actor translates a lot into how Nithin Molly as a character works. Nivin is one of the few actors who can convincingly pull off over-the-top comedy, and he does that prolifically in this film. You see flashes of his best (Oru Vadakkan Selfie, Premam) and hope that more directors can tap into this strength of his. With Varshangalkku Shesham and the upcoming Malayalee from India, we can finally say that Nivin’s back baby!

OK, so those were 6 reasons…got carried away because that’s how much I want you to go watch Varshangalkku Shesham at the theatre. Trust me, you won’t regret it. If you are someone who has watched Varshangalkku Shesham already, tell us your thoughts about the movie in the comments.
